The New Milford Knights have a six-foot-four-inch, two hundred pound star athlete named Matt McElroy. Following in his older brother, Andrew McElroy’s, footsteps in being a three sport athlete, McElroy competes in football, basketball, and track.

Bill Wilde, the varsity football head coach for NMHS said, “Matt is a tremendous athlete. There’s not too many natural six-foot-four-inch, two hundred pound kids that are able to move like he does. He’s a dual threat on the field against other teams.”

When asked how he feels about McElroy’s role on the field, teammate Dave Willock responded, “Matt is a leader on and off the field. He always wants people to strive for the best.”

Willock also played with Matt’s older brother, Andrew McElroy, for two years and said, “Matt is a younger Andrew with his athletic ability, being able to make plays and be in the right spot at the right time.”

As the middle child in the McElroy family, Matt says, “Andrew set a good example for me as an athlete… It’s good playing three sports all year round as it keeps me busy.”

McElroy also stated he began playing sports at a young age because “I just started playing them and at the end of it I fell in love with them.”

McElroy is a role model  for some NMHS athletes. He’s been a varsity athlete since he was a freshman and excels at every sport he plays. When asked how sports impact his life, McElroy said, “Sports are a major part of my life because I’ve been playing them nonstop since I was young. They’re just a part  of who I am.”

McElroy is always involved with sports throughout the year, so I asked him how sports help him  in his everyday life. “I mean, I’m usually doing something sports related almost everyday so it’s a big part of my everyday life. It instilled a lot of responsibilities in my life, as well.”

As for his ultimate goal in playing high school sports, McElroy said, “My ultimate goals are to win a state championship in football and basketball.”
