The fourth annual “KCON” has just been announced to be held for three-days beginning on July 31 until August 2 in Los Angeles, California at the Staples Center and will debut on the East Coast on August 8, which is to be held at the Newark Prudential Center in New Jersey. It originally was held at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Irvine, California but has since then expanded to a larger area with the number of fans increasing each year. This year, the expansion not only will head to the New York area but also has already expanded to Japan on April 22 with the increasing number of “kpop” fans.

On Friday April 24, a Google Live Hangout was broadcasted from the KCONUSA headquarters to reveal the new expansion as well as to ask fans for artists they want to see at the conventions this year. Some recommendations from fans included SHINee, Bangtan Boys (also known as BTS), and Red Velvet.

In previous years since 2012, there have been different panels and workshops for fans to enjoy as well as numerous acts that have performed at the evening concerts.

The panels consist of famous YouTube reaction stars of newly released music videos such as Dylan from “TheChannelofDylan”, Jre and Kml from “JREKML”, and Patrick from “freshlyFLIPPED”. The reason behind the different panelists is to have fan meets where they can interact with their fans and have Q and A sessions as well.

There is also a dance tent called the “Dance ALL Day Tent” available for fans that wish to learn the dances to their favorite songs. The tent includes dance lessons for fans as well as opportunities for fans to perform their favorite routines for others to see.

Artists that have performed at the event are all big names in South Korea, some of which that have been in the music industry for years or others that are somewhat newer but are still loved by their international fans. Some of the acts that have performed at the convention are EXO, both EXO-M and EXO-K, f(x), G-Dragon from Big Bang, and Girls’ Generation.

Students at New Milford High School were asked if they heard about the convention and how they did. Surprisingly, several students did know of the convention and were excited to attend.

Sophomore and avid kpop fan Christine Galvez said she learned about the expansion of the convention on Twitter when it was announced on the official KCONUSA Twitter account. She stated that she has been saving money for the show since the announcement was made. “I’m most excited to see SHINee and actor Jong-Suk Lee.”

She further explained, “I’m most excited to see Taemin Lee from SHINee because he has had great live performances with his recent solo debut.”

Another fan, Caren Opina, said she was not only excited for the performances by the artists but she is also excited to be able to share the experience with other fans that have the same interests as her.

“It’s hard to find people that like the same music I do so when people are able to enjoy the same groups I do, I want to share the experience with them.”

Junior Carla Contreras said she heard about KCON on social media, mainly Instagram, and is excited to see the fandom community that share the same interests as her.

Sophomore Isabelle Gallego agrees with her fellow classmates and says, “I’m most excited to see all the performances from the artists and the fans as well.”

The convention not only includes music from the Korean wave but also workshops that include the newest beauty trends from South Korea as well as guest appearances from rising actors and actresses.

Famous Korean beauty guru on YouTube, beautifymeeh, made an appearance at a beauty workshop last summer. Actor Seung-gi Lee and television host Eric Nam both made appearances as special guests as well the same year.

Although the official lineup has not been announced yet, fans are diligently waiting to hear which of their favorite artists will perform at this year’s concerts.
KCON has been long awaited on the East Coast as many fans have pleaded for the convention to be brought over to the other side of the United States for years and now it is finally able to happen.
