Last year’s rap music sucked so bad I had to listen to instrumental music in order to quench my thirst for good hip hop music. Besides still discovering gems like Venomous 2000 and Damien Styles in 2014, the most memorable music included these short but sweet instrumentals released by anime influenced hip hop heads like Metanite, Dark Kurama, and Jay Alpha.

However, my favorite producer of these type of delights was [offbeatninja]. His style wasn’t as hard as DKO’s style and wasn’t as sonic and spaced out as Yuni Wa’s, but it was soulful and chill, like the refreshing and gentle spray of a neighbor’s sprinkler while you’re walking outside during a hot summer day. If “the good times” in everyone’s life have a specific sound, mine would be this guy’s music, even though I discovered him in 2014, which ironically was one of the worst years of my life.

He’s got music for thinkers, music for the spiritual, and music for those who simply want to laze around. The way he utilizes his samples is amazing and the chops are always clean and never off beat, despite the promising producer’s name. His drum patterns are also very creative– many of his beats are not the typical boom bap hip hop heads expect, but they still deliver the same hearty sound a good hip hop beat should have.

I reached out to the fellow soundcloud user for an interview to get a deeper look into the man behind the music.

How old are you and where are you from?

“I’m 21 years ancient and I’m currently in Jacksonville, Florida.”

What equipment do you use for beat production?

“I don’t really use my equipment, but I use this free website called audiotool.com.”

What music or specific musicians inspired you to get into beat production and what inspires you to continue delivering free beat to the public today?

“I like all types of music so I don’t really have a favorite, as for musician that inspires me I would have to Daft Punk, watching Toonami and seeing them on the screen got me wanting to make music. And as for me to continue to making music I would say all the people out there who support my stuff yah know? Because without them I wouldn’t be here right now.”

Where do you like to get your samples from? Any favorite genre picks?

“Anywhere-  YouTube, Vinyl, Cassette, etc. There is really no favorite genre for me; if it’s good music I’m going to vibe to it.”

What’s your favorite anime show/movie of all time and why?

Samurai Champloo has to be my favorite anime, because the way they blend Hip-Hop and anime so well.”

How much influence does anime have on your music on a scale of one to ten (ten being the highest)? DO certain anime shows influence you to make beats more than others?

‘It’s 50/50, some days I make beats inspired by anime and sometimes I don’t make anything because I’m watching anime.  As for the scale I’ll have to say ‘Over 9,000!’ just kidding it’s about a 10 my dude.”

What effect do you intend your music to have on listeners?

“Just a new experience and to come along with me a journey to the unknown.  It’s like a road trip without a map.’

Full projects from [offbeatninja] can be found here. I have not listened to any in particular because I only check his regular soundcloud releases (which is why I cannot necessarily score this artist’s work), but I should probably get on that, and I think you should, too. It’s nice to enjoy a fresh sound, just in time for all of this warm weather.
Happy listening. Peace.
