Entering his senior year and final high school sports seasons, Gregory Magro is looking to make the most out of it. As a three-year Varsity basketball and baseball player, Magro has been on New Milford Varsity rosters since he was just a sophomore.

As a point guard, Magro has serious range from the perimeter as well as impressive ball handling skills. Magro is also a shortstop on the baseball team that anchors down the left side of the infield for the Knights and adds the speed dynamic to the lineup. Interestingly, Magro started for the Knights on Opening Day 2014 as a shortstop, making him the youngest player on the team.

Richard Garbarino played basketball up to sophomore year with Magro and he has played baseball with him since they were young children. He said, “It’s a great experience playing with [Magro]. He’s fast, very athletic and good at the sports that he plays. More importantly, he’s serious when he has to be, but he also keeps it light on the field, which makes it a lot of fun to play with him.”

Garbarino added that Magro’s work ethic is top-notch. “He is very dedicated and competitive, so he takes his sports seriously and strives to be the best out there.” Garbarino describes his relationship on the field with Magro as “Very close because as a pitcher, he’s always there to back me up and as a first baseman, we are constantly working together.”

Nicholas Maou, a teammate of Greg’s for twelve years in basketball and baseball, shares a special connection with Magro that is hard to find. Both of them are guards on the basketball team and middle infielders on the baseball team with Magro playing shortstop and Maou playing second base.

Maou speaks highly of Magro, and thinks that they have great chemistry.  “We definitely have great chemistry being friends for so long, on and off the field, and it’s always been him at shortstop and me at second base.” Maou described Magro as “a good leader who takes charge and helps out the younger players.”

Magro says that his favorite memory of his high school sports career “was making the Varsity basketball and baseball teams during my sophomore year, but hitting my first three-pointer at a home game was very exciting. My state baseball game last year [was the biggest game I’ve been part of] where we faced Mountain Lakes in an important game.”

Magro further stated that the preseason is “…very important as you get your skills in order and build chemistry as a team that we can use throughout the season.”

Magro has some serious goals for this season.  He stated, “We’re definitely looking to win the league, qualify for the state tournament and make a run in states.”

Although these are his final seasons at New Milford High School, we could see Magro on a baseball field at the collegiate level. Magro has yet to decide on where he is attending in the Fall Semester of 2016; however, he hinted at Salisbury University as a potential destination.
Overall, Magro has had a solid athletic career at New Milford High School. Making the Varsity squad for basketball and baseball as a sophomore was only the beginning of good things to come for New Milford Athletics. Throughout his career, he has earned the respect of coaches, teammates, and fans with hard work and determination. When Gregory Magro steps off of the baseball diamond for the final time as a New Milford Knight, it will be tough to find a player of those characteristics.
