Summer vacation is one of the most anticipated times of the year for high school students. During the break, many seniors travel with their family or friends to enjoy their last full vacation before heading off to college the following summer. Whether it’s to finally meet distant relatives, see historic places or relax poolside, summer vacation is usually a memorable experience.

Many seniors at New Milford High School enjoyed their last summer before graduating by visiting other countries, attending college visits, or spending time in different states.

The top ten summer vacation spots seniors at NMHS traveled to included California, Florida (Key West & Orlando), North Carolina, Wyoming, Texas, Vermont, London, the Philippines and the Dominican Republic.

Henry Sternberg, another writer for The Lance, reported that his vacation was spent in London. “I went on the trip with my family and saw the Abbey Road Crossing, the Tower of London, Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey, Saint Peter’s Church and several other places. My favorite memory was probably touring Buckingham Palace, there was some pretty good cake at the end.”

Co-Editor of The Lance, Sarah Valdez, made the most of her summer, as well, when she traveled to the Dominican Republic with her mom, step-dad, brothers and aunt. “I’ve been travelling there since I was 2 or 3 years old, but my favorite memory this year was definitely in Samana when I went to Salto de Limon, which is basically a waterfall.” When asked if she would change anything about the trip, Valdez responded, “I would probably make the trip the same, it was a lot of fun!”

Alyssa Henyecz, co-captain of the varsity soccer team, stated, “I went to North Carolina to visit four different colleges with my family and friend Sara Mulligan. I visited the University of North Carolina Wilmington, Elon University, and Winthrop University at South Carolina. It was an awesome trip and I wish I could’ve stayed longer than four days.”

Sara Mulligan, player on the varsity soccer, explained, “I took a road trip to Wyoming, so I drove through all the states in between with my dad and younger sister Rachel. My favorite memory was horseback riding in Cody, Wyoming and going over the mountains. It was cool going through other states like Ohio, Iowa, South Dakota and Nebraska.”

Senior class president and cheer co-captain, Caitlin Walsh, traveled to Florida and visited both Universal Parks in Orlando. She also explained, “I primarily went to visit family and went to Sarasota for about two weeks and stayed at a penthouse on the beach. I was also in Tampa for two days and visited some colleges.”

Many seniors here at NMHS made the most of their last summer as a high school student, but many were just as excited for the school year to finally begin. Several seniors claimed they were ready to experience their high school career as “top dog” and can’t wait to see what this year has in store.
