Melanie Martinez is a 21 year old singer/songwriter from Baldwin, New York with a unique look and even more unique sound. With half blonde and half black hair (inspired by Cruella de Vil), big doll eyes, and a haunting, yet adorable sound to match, Martinez has captured the attention of a devoted audience.

Martinez first entered into the spotlight on the television show “The Voice”, where she shocked the judges with her compelling cover of Britney Spears’s hit song “Toxic”. She was on the show until it’s fifth week when she was eliminated. However, this was no defeat. It only marked the beginning of her career.

Once her time on the show drew to a close, Martinez began to work on her own material. This led to the release of the Dollhouse EP in 2014. The EP was taken note of by many, including FX’s “American Horror Story: Freakshow”, who used her song “Carousel” for promotion. The “Dollhouse Tour” followed suit, where Martinez was finally able to share her original content on her own stage (which was littered in dolls, teddy bears and toys – perfectly fitting to her music).

The doll-like, childhood inspired themes that Martinez became known for only grew with the creation of her debut album, “Cry Baby”. The heavily conceptual album revolves around the character Cry Baby and obstacles she faces in her life. Behind these child-like themes is always a deeper, darker message which pertains to adult life. For example there is “Sippy Cup”, which references addiction and “Tag, You’re It”, which describes a kidnapping.

A fan, Natalie Benoit (‘17), describes Martinez as, “An up and coming artist who will certainly outdo Halsey” – a fellow musician who is often associated with Martinez.
Martinez is currently in the process of creating music videos for each song on the album, as visuals are very important to her. Presently, she is also wrapping up her “Cry Baby Tour”, which began mid 2015. On top of all of this, Martinez has also revealed that her second album is in the works, and will continue with the conceptual theme of character Cry Baby in a whole new way.
