On December 11, Santa and his elves made a stop at New Milford High School. He brought crafts and good food on his sleigh.

Every year, New Milford High School hosts its own breakfast with Santa. The freshman class officers and Mrs. Bernardo are in charge of putting it together. Money was raised for the breakfast through local business advertisements. For contributing money towards the breakfast, businesses had their names printed on the table mats used during the event. This year, the event found support from “all types of businesses”. Whether the support came from a supermarket, a doughnut shop, a dentist’s office, a contractor, an electrician, a deli, a florist, a school department, or a landscaping agency, it was all appreciated.

Every year the freshman class also depends on the help of New Milford High School students and staff to run the event alongside them.

Lillian Hui (‘17) has worked the drink table at the Holiday Breakfast all of her four years in high school. She said, “I am always volunteering every year, because I love the atmosphere. I can’t turn down Mrs. Bernardo. She always asks me to come back and work the drinks. I’m going to be sad, because this is my last year. She’s already trying to figure out who can take my place. She always said no one is better than me at the drink table.”

Santa and his elves arrived at the back of the school on a firetruck at 9:30 A.M. They were immediately swarmed by children.

Mrs. Bernardo said, “My favorite moment was when Santa Claus entered the cafeteria. This one little boy ran up and hugged Santa’s leg really tight. The little boy’s smile made all the work we did worth it.”

The children were not the only ones overwhelmed by warm emotions.

New Milford’s very own Santa, Officer Wilde, said, “I love being Santa. I love giving back and making kids smile. I still believe in Santa Claus. I’d do anything for these kids. I love them.”

Haley McAveney (‘17) an elf, said, “I really loved being an elf this year for Christmas during the holiday breakfast, because the children are all really cute. It was a really fun experience.”

There was a line of children waiting for Santa. Some brought drawings for Santa, while others wanted to have their wishes heard by him.

Joann Lebron, a school lunch cashier, said that for Christmas this year, she wants, “A brand new car.”

Hui said, “I want the whole world, but I can’t have that so I’ll settle for little things, like family time.”

When asked what she wanted for Christmas, Julie Manzo hugged her mom and said, “I can’t tell.” Her mom replied, “She wants a play kitchen.” Julie Manzo added, “Just the kitchen.”

Everyone enters the season  looking for something different. The breakfast, however, demonstrated that although people might have their own wishes, they know how to come together to enjoy the company of others.
