Senior Natalie Miller (’17) has scored herself a position in the spotlight with her recent accomplishment of scoring 1,000 points on New Milford’s girls’ varsity basketball team. The breast cancer awareness tournament game at Fair Lawn High School was one to go down in New Milford High’s athletic history.

When asked if she ever expected to reach such a monumental milestone during her high school basketball career, Miller stated “People told me I would score 1,000 but I was never really sure it would happen until about mid season last year.”

Although she may not have anticipated this moment from the very beginning, she always had motivation to do so. “My freshman year one of my teammates scored her 1,000th point and I remember thinking that I wanted to have that same moment. I saw the 1,000 point club banner in the gym pretty much every day so that was really my motivation. I worked really hard in the off-season and each year I scored about 100 more points than the last.”

Through all of the hard work Miller put in, it is evident that this kind of accomplishment is no easy feat.

“I’ve wanted this to happen since my freshman year and I’m only the ninth girl in school history to accomplish this. This kind of thing doesn’t happen every day so it was pretty special.”

The moment itself was filled with cheers from supportive peers and a celebration with her fellow teammates.

“It was a really cool moment because all my teammates ran out on the court and we had a group hug. The best part of the moment was that I got to share it with them because they’ve been a huge part of this accomplishment.”

The 1,000 points she scored definitely does not mark the end of her basketball accomplishments, as she states her plans to continue playing in college, “I’m going to Stockton next year to play basketball so I’m pretty excited about that.”

There is much more in store for Miller not only with basketball, but in other sports she plays, especially with softball coming up.

“For softball, I’m about 30 hits away from 100, so I hope to accomplish that, as well.”

Make sure to keep an eye out on Natalie Miller as she is bound to keep accomplishing great things as an athlete!
