On February 27 Haley McAveney broke the school indoor track record in the 1600m State Meet of Champions. Many might see McAveney’s bright, vibrant smile around school, but she’s a track phenom at setting milestones. McAveney stands at four feet eleven inches with the heart of a lion.

This isn’t the first time McAveney has set record breaking numbers her senior season. McAveney has run the 1600m throughout her four years with NMHS. Her hard work paid off when she broke the 1600m for the first time with a time of 5:41.14. McAveney smashed her milestone with the time of 5:34.4 this past weekend.

When asked how she felt breaking the record and if she thought she would break the record twice, McAveney answered, “Breaking the record was so rewarding, because of how hard I’ve worked this season. I did think I could break the record twice, and actually, that was what I had wanted to do at the Meet of Champions. I’m so glad I did it, and I hope to continue to cut time off my mile.”

She stated, “Breaking the mile record has been my goal since freshman year, and I honestly wasn’t sure I was going to be able to do it. So finally reaching that point in my track career was amazing.”

McAveney also responded to who she would give high praise for her achievements, she said, “My coaches, Mr. Kelly and Mr. Hartney, who not only trained me, but gave me the confidence to work hard and push myself.”

Haley is an outstanding student athlete, and will be breaking milestones in spring track this season. She is hoping to run in college for the next four years.
