Some of the events in the school are not always highlighted as much in this school as often as they should be. One of those projects is Project Unified, a project in which the teachers and athletes of New Milford High School help the intellectually disabled children of this school.

This club allows this population of students to play sports such as bowling, football, basketball and are working towards a slew of other sports. Many student athletes who have the time to participate in these events, such as sophomores Emmett McElroy, John DeSena, and Ian Estrada, have a tremendous impact on the events.

“It feels good and it is a lot of fun. It’s good to know that you can still have a lot of fun, these kids are a lot of fun to play with, they are very competitive and it makes it easy for  us to just relax and play basketball with them,” says Estrada, a participant in the Project Unified basketball team.

DeSena states, “This is very important to them. They play hard and they always have an upbeat attitude as far as playing basketball.”

Another participant in Project Unified is the head football coach Bill Wilde who states, “I was so excited when they allowed me to coach with this program. It is always a blast. The volunteers put forth their best effort, and those kids play their hearts out. I’m glad we were able to put this together for these kids, they’re a great group of kids and they deserve events like these.”Also in charge is Mrs. Dalosio who states ” These kids have a tremendous love for basketball, I was very excited to have the opportunity to put this event together for them, they’re always shooting around basketballs in gym class, they truly love basketball. We put together a bunch of different events for them to participate.”  Another participant ecstatic in this project is senior Michael Karsos whom stated ” I really love Basketball. It’s my favorite sport to play around with my friends, and I’m very happy that the school put this event together for us .”

Basketball is not the only sport the Project Unified team has been able to put together for these kids, they also have created football, bowling and are working on baseball. Project Unified hosts multiple sporting events for students. Make sure you come out to one of these events.
