Harry Styles is redefining himself as an artist with his new self-titled album. His new album strays from the bubblegum-pop sound we know and love from his past. Now, his music has obviously matured, with an added rock-n’-roll edge.

On April 7, Styles released the single “Sign of the Times”. Prior to that, on March 27, he revealed the title of the song with a television ad. The slow, almost-indie feel to the song gave fans a taste of what his solo-debut would be like.

Excitement for the new album mounted for fans as Styles teased them with hints at what the feel of the album was. On April 13, he put out a list of the songs on his album, and on April 15, Styles performed the released single on Saturday Night Live, and then also performed “Ever Since New York”, which had not yet been released. On May 2, he released another song, “Sweet Creature”, which was just as slow and sweet as “Sign of the Times” – making fans wonder whether or not his whole album would be as laid-back.

May 5, tickets for Styles’ first-ever solo world tour went on sale, which sold out within the first 30 seconds of them being on sale. Joanna Zaccardi and Vanessa Nunez, two New Milford High School seniors, were lucky enough to be able to get tickets for his New York show on September 28. Joanna tells us that when she got the tickets, she “started crying! They sold out in literally 30 seconds, and I’m usually very unlucky, so the fact that I got them was crazy!” The last time Zaccardi saw Styles perform live, it was with One Direction. “It’s sad, you know, I miss him all together with everyone, but I know he’s going to do great on his own.”

On May 8, Styles put out a romantic and imaginative music video for “Sign of the Times”, which involved him floating through the air as the sun set in the background. He flew over mountains, fields, and a lake, probably in reference to the lines “breaking through the atmosphere”, and the allusions to heaven he makes throughout the song.

On May 12, Styles finally released his first solo album. There was a wide stylistic range between each of his songs, showing his diversity as an artist. “Meet Me in the Hallway”, “Sweet Creature”, “Ever Since New York”, “From the Dining Table”, and “Two Ghosts” are slow, sweet, and thoughtful. It’s obvious they’re personal songs, but, as Styles said in “Harry Styles: Behind the Album” — a video accompanying the album — he “wanted to see if I could write something that people liked without knowing everything about me.” So, although the songs have lots of personal meaning to him, they’re pretty cryptic to the fans.

On the other hand, with “Carolina”, “Only Angel”, “Kiwi”, and “Woman” they are nothing like the others. The fun, loud, and “classic rock” feel of these songs shows us a different side of Harry Styles — a side we always knew was there with his unbuttoned shirts and tons of tattoos. It’s good to see him finally expressing himself. The reception he’s received from not only from old fans, but from new ones is refreshing and exciting to see.

Allison Supino (’18), a long time fan, says of his new album, “When I first heard Harry’s album it was much different than I expected and weird in a good way. Harry is a weird kid, so I wasn’t expecting anything less from him! I’m happy that he’s happy with what he’s doing and is finally putting out music that he actually enjoys!”

Sara Savino (’17) is also a long-time fan of Harry. She says, “Harry’s new album is a complete different style from when he was in One Direction. He has a rock and roll style and I love the fact that he’s branching out.”

It’s safe to say that Styles’ solo career is going to be a success. His fans can’t wait to see what he does next!
