May 21 brought clouds to New Milford, but the clouds carried neon colors across the sky.

Students and supporters alike had a great time at the second organized color run event, held at the New Milford High School. This year, the newly created branch of UNICEF at the school organized the run and renamed it “The Color Rush”. With the assistance of the local police department, volunteer services from EMS, DPW, the fire department, Academy students and school teachers, the run produced an approximate $1,000. Proceeds went towards the the actual organization, UNICEF, to help woman and children in developing nations. The NM branch of the organization was started by senior student Seungyoon Baek(’17), with school guidance counselor Mrs. Harle as the group’s adviser.

The run lasted approximately 45 minutes with River Road and several other side roads being closed down for the event. The Color Rush kicked off with the president of the branch, Seungyoon Baek, reciting a speech thanking the volunteers, contributors and the participants for coming out and helping the organization. At the starting line, sophomore Caroline Digan (’19) sang the National Anthem, while Charlie Sternberg (’15), an NMHS alumni, played the Anthem on his trombone.

Seungyoon Baek led the charge. After attending a meeting at the United Nations in New York, he became alerted with the growing social and economic status for women and children in developing countries. In an interview with The Record, Seungyoon explains, “From then I decided to fundraise the money for UNICEF by doing this color run. Thank you for anyone that came out to support UNICEF’s vision and I hope you had a blast like I did.”

Registration for the Color Rush opened at 8 a.m and the run itself began at 10 a.m. Afterwards, volunteers and runners participated in a “color party” where together, everyone took remaining color packets/bottles and simultaneously threw it up in the air to create an enormous color cloud. The festivities ended with plenty of  pictures and smiles.
