The New Milford Education Foundation sponsored its 5th Annual 5k10k run on October 28, where it had an amazing turnout with more than 400 people showing up to run. It varied from students to teachers to just regular citizens from around New Milford and Bergen County to participate. The race began at Gibbs Elementary school for all participants; the racers then ran into the surrounding neighborhood with the 10K participants heading down to New Bridge Landing before returning to finish at Gibbs.

“I never ran a 10K before and I thought it would be a great idea,’ said ”Luke Tyler (‘18), a senior at New Milford High School who placed 15th overall out of 173 people. “The first 5K was difficult but when I started my last mile it was just all adrenaline.”

Many volunteers turned out as well; racers needed assistance for directions but also needed that extra boost of encouragement as well. As I stood directing others during the 5K10K portion, I saw racers, volunteers, and other people who simply came out of their house to watch encouraging others to push themselves. I also witnessed many children running with their parents who were both telling their parents they could do it and vice versa. It just shows how good the people of New Milford and Bergen County are to each other and even though it was race, people were encouraging others to run faster and to go the distance.

With this in mind, as I headed back to Gibbs to the finish line, I saw many racers who had already finished laughing and joking with one another, showing that while people are very competitive while running, in the end, it’s nice to see everyone get along.
