Mary Poppins is right around the corner and time is going by fast as the cast begin to complete the finishing touches on all of the scenes. The cast and crew have worked diligently for several months and this year’s musical could be the best one yet. Due to their dedication, hard work, and commitment, numbers such as “Step in Time” seem like a breeze to some of these newcomers  Andre DeCastro (’18) is playing Michael Banks, Adrianna Viera (’19) landed the role of Winifred Banks, and Karen Kim (’19) is performing as a member of the ensemble.

When asked about the roles that they landed, Andre stated that he was “very shocked” when he got a lead, asserting that when “… I saw the cast list, I was speechless.” It’s very surprising for him since this is the first musical he has auditioned for and to receive a lead was downright surprising. Adrianna remembers that “It was surreal that I got a role, let alone a lead. It just didn’t seem it would ever happen to me, but it did so it was great.” Like most musicals, the ensemble is just as important as the leads and Karen Kim expresses “Yes, the lead characters are important but the show can’t be done without ensemble. The ensemble fills the empty caps in the musical.”

During practices, a bond grows between all the cast members. Adrianna states “It’s practically family with the other cast, it’s very loving.” Karen goes on to say “These people are different, they’re weird like me.” The raw emotion with the cast is unimaginable. “Love this group, I couldn’t ask for more… These people have a big impact on my life,” Andre says. After all, they do work hard, forming new friendships and becoming stronger together as a whole. One tool they always use is their voice, which is the instrument they use for the entire musical, so it makes sense to ask how they preserve their voice, and most them agreed, saying “drink a lot of water” and “don’t scream and do anything to strain your voice.” Other than that, the cast continues to work hard at what they’re doing to put on a good show for everyone.

Mary Poppins premieres March 15th and continues with performances on the 16th and 17th. Come and get tickets to support your friends and family–and always remember to “Step in Time”!
