New Music in the Works for Shawn Mendes

Shawn Mendes left fans shocked and excited when he tweeted several pictures implying that new music was on the way. After not releasing music since September 2016, Shawn dropped two new songs titled “In My Blood” and “Lost In Japan.” Compared to his past two albums, these songs bring a whole new sound and style to Shawn’s music that can even reach a new audience. “In My Blood” is more of an emotional alternative rock ballad about his own battle with anxiety and the struggles he has faced. Not only is this song a new sound because of the genre of music, but also because Shawn has never been this open and vulnerable in his music. While speaking with Zane Lowe about the new track he explains, “It was kind of something that hit me last year. Growing up, I was a pretty calm kid. I knew people who suffered from anxiety, found it kind of hard to understand, and then when it hits you, you’re like, ‘Oh my god, this is crazy.’” Mendes also explains that during the songwriting process, he wanted to make a Kings of Leon inspired record and wanted to sound more rock.

However, that’s just one of Shawn’s inspirations on his new upcoming album. His new R&B pop song, “Lost In Japan” has a completely different sound and a whole different meaning. Mendes revealed that for this song he was inspired by Justin Timberlake and got the initial idea from a dream he had. Shawn explains, “I had this dream that I was lost in this country and I woke up the next day and we had this cool piano part and the song was birthed.”

It is clear that Mendes is going for a new sound and is taking his inspirations to make his records. So far, these songs have been doing well on the iTunes charts staying in the Top 30. These new records show that Shawn’s upcoming album will not be like anything we’ve heard from him before.
