In the NBA there was a lot of good draftees this year, but who deserves to win the prestigious Rookie of the Year award? The top three rookies, according to NBC, are Ben Simmons, Donovan Mitchell, and Jayson Tatum.

Ben Simmons was the number one overall pick by the Philadelphia 76ers in 2016 but what classifies him as a rookie this year is that he missed all of last year having to get surgery to repair his broken foot. The other draftees, Donovan Mitchell, who was drafted 13th overall by the Utah Jazz, and Jayson Tatum, who was the 3rd overall pick by the Boston Celtics, are members of the 2017 class.

Utah’s Donovan Mitchell leads all rookies by averaging 20.3 points per game followed by Ben Simmons who averages 16 points per game, and Jayson Tatum who averages 13.6 points per game. According to ESPN, Donovan Mitchell is averaging 20.3 points per game, 33.3 minutes, 3.7 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 1.5 steals, and .4 blocks. Ben Simmons is averaging 16.0 points per game, 34.2 minutes, 7.9 rebounds, 8.0 assists, 1.7 steals, and .8 blocks. Finally, Jayson Tatum is averaging 13.6 points per game, 30.5 minutes, 5.1 rebounds, 1.5 assists, .9 steals, and .8 blocks.

As one can see, each one of these players is extremely valuable to the success of their respective teams. Currently, Ben Simmons has the best overall statistics but it is still a competition between all three of them. Personally, I feel that Ben Simmons should get it simply based on the fact that he has the best overall stats compared to every other rookie and has helped in the transformation of the Philadelphia 76ers. He and Joel Embiid brought a team that’s last year record was 28-54 and went from the 14th seed in the Eastern Conference to be the 4th seed with a record of 43-30 in a year’s time. That’s a ten seed difference mainly because of how much Ben Simmons contributes to his team.

People could argue either side in this debate and bring up strong points up for either one of these players, but Ben Simmons has the best overall statistics and contributes the most to the success of his team, which is why he should be the NBA’s next Rookie of the Year.
